Overcoming Adversity - SOS Ayala-Alabang

from the archives of The Freeman:

“Are you nervous?” asked Mr. Bautista.
“No, sir,” replied Harris.
“By the way, what is the name of the orphanage you came from?”
“SOS Children’s Village, sir.”
Yes, Harris is different from other PAL pilots (who are not customarily presented to the company president before taking their first flight) because he demonstrated determination to be where he is now after a life of struggle to free himself from the clutches of mendicancy.

Mel Libre's song composition for SOS

from the archives of The Freeman:

Mel Libre is no stranger in writing theme songs. He had written quite a number of pieces for various causes, institutions and organizations. Among these were those for the 1994 Cebu Palarong Pambansa and the Philippine National Red Cross. He also wrote the thematic jingles for Aboitiz & Co. and Sun*Star newspaper.

In his piece for SOS, as he did for the 1994 National Games that Cebu City hosted, Mel will invite Cebu artists to contribute their talents for the cause of SOS. The piece will be like the combined concept of the 1984 post-Grammy night “We Are The World” and “Hand in Hand” of Koreana for the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

“But ‘The Children of The World’ will have a contemporary touch,” he said.

In My Village by Leticia Suarez-Orendain

from the archives of Sun*Star:

Seven orphans found a sanctuary and could say, “In my village I have a home and a family.” Nothing remarkable - unless you are the orphan.

This place under the sun is SOS Children’s Village. The non-government organization (NGO) is found in Manila, Iloilo, Davao, Cebu, Lipa, Calbayog and Tacloban.

A part of SOS Kinderdorf International, SOS Children’s Village Cebu was founded on Jan. 9, 1979.

Hermann Gmeiner founded SOS in 1949 as the Children’s Village in Austria for World War 2 orphans. He was convinced that help is effective only if a child grows within a family and a home.

There are now 40,000 children living in 380 villages in 130 countries. As of 2002, SOS Cebu has 133 children and youth, 22 youth and 154 integrated.

SOS works on four principles: the stay-in house mother (Nanay), siblings, the house and the village (designed to be part of the neighborhood with all the children attending local schools and taking part in community activities).
